So there was a study about basketball players visualizing themselves sinking free throws. It’s been quoted 1000 times.
And while I think it started off as well intentioned it has become a monster.
The idea now is that all you have to do is visualize success and it happens.
The original study was about accomplished athletes adding visualization to their repertoire of practice.
They had the fundamentals already. They had already thrown thousands of free throws.
By adding visualization it sharpened their physical and mechanical skills.
For us business owners, you have to be marketing. You have to be writing for your marketing.
You get good at it. Somethings work somethings don’t work.
There is always going to be mystery.
And along the way you visualize yourself writing great stuff and you visualize people enjoying your work.
But it is a feedback loop. It is not something that is done in isolation.
You have to write a lot. And then you visualize yourself being sharp and good and witty and well received and then you write some more.
And then you visualize more.
And then you arrive at a place you never expected.
But you have to be doing the fundamentals.
I happen to enjoy the fundamentals and I add wonderful imagery of myself doing well and the audience enjoying it. You not only need to do both – you also need the constant input of good material that feeds your imagination and helps you work on your skills.
