We live in the age of the Tortured Marketing Genius.
Go to any forum or Facebook group and you’ll see them writhing around in agony.
They’re always trying to find the perfect trick to take some faceless customer’s money.
The first mistake they’re making is thinking that marketing is all about them.
The second mistake is that they are paying very little attention to their flesh and blood customer.
Any one of these people could fix their problems today, simply by asking themselves this question:
What does the customer want?
When you do this, your life becomes easier and your business becomes profitable.
Life is easier because you’ve dropped the anxiety of your problems.
Your business becomes profitable because you are focused on your customer’s needs.
Writing marketing copy, coming up with promotions, all flows from asking yourself what your customer wants.
Marketing becomes enjoyable because you’re focused on another, real human being.
Yes, you will use tools and techniques to gain and keep your customer’s attention.
But they will flow out of your genuine interest in your customer.
You’ll cease to be a walled-up crank and become someone people actually want to do business with.
Because they will sense you actually care about what they want.
Focusing on what the customer wants, over and over, until it becomes your natural mode of thought, will reinvent your business.
It will become a place where people want to gather and exchange their money for your goods and services.
As a result of concentrating on the customer’s needs, you’ll make more sales and any kind of manic self-obsession will be gone forever.
Ask yourself, what does the customer want?
Then give it to them.
Let them know you’re going to give it to them with your marketing.
Then give it to them in your service.
You’ll be making good on your promise and proving to both the customer and yourself, why you’re actually in business.
