Hey, this is Frank publisher of Retired Writer’s Club a secret email list that we send out every day to our subscribers that teaches you the tactics and techniques you need to do the one thing business has to do, which is make money.
And to make money by acquiring customers and serving their needs, which are mostly emotional.
And we cover that in the free book you get when you join, that’s called MANIPULATION – Emotional triggers that make people buy!
What I wanted to cover today is an advanced technique for what you need to do to retain customers. That is to not only acquire them and get them to spend money with you, but to make sure they’re happy after the sale. I do it.
I’ll tell you about that in a second, but I want to illustrate how we did it with our five-year-old son. He had gone to one school, you know, pre-K and he got into the habit of trying to negotiate not going.
He would say, maybe I don’t want to go today. Can we stay home? Mommy, I want to hang out with you. Daddy, can I go to work with you?
That kind of thing. So when that school ended, he was going to start another camp and we realized that we had to condition him to buy this product known as school, which is a tough sell because school is a job for which you do not get paid. Right?
So Julie and I went to work on him and before it started, we said, it’s going to be awesome. Right? We’re pre-selling, that’s the concept here.
We’re pre-selling a five-year-old on getting excited about the product called school. It’s going to be great. You’re going to meet new kids. I think Jack is going to be in the class. You’re going to meet your teachers from next year. The first day is dinosaur day. You’re going to do this. You’re going to do that. You’re going to have so much fun and you even get to bring a lunch, like a big boy, right?
So we’re doing all this pre-selling to get him excited about buying this product, which is not really a good deal. If you’re a kid, school is not a good deal.
Then starting with the first day he came home, we did the after the sale follow-up where we were saying, how was it? Did you have fun? We saw the pictures, the teacher sent out a group text, look at this picture of you, is that your new friend, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. What’d you learn about dinosaurs today. I heard you did a craft. You played a game, blah, blah, blah.
So every single day, and this was like a one week camp, we pre-sold school. And then we did the after the sales stuff. So we solidified his idea or his acceptance of the value of this product that we were selling him.
It’s a very common tactic, right? I do it myself. I do videos. I do blogs. I do a daily email to people to convince them to buy my stuff, which is why I’m in business.
And then once you buy, you get a series of seven follow-up emails. Emails reminding you of all the value that’s in the members area. So at first there’s a welcome letter. Then it’s like, oh, here’s the content you get. And then number two, here’s the content you get, we’ve got eight free content items in the members area.
This is all in addition to Retired Writer’s Club, which is the secret email list. So look at any business, they all do it. They advertise, they promote their stuff. Then they sell their stuff. And the good businesses follow up. Just checking in. Are you happy with your car? Do you like your new Lexus?
We’re always here for you. It’s not always true for car dealers, but you know, the first week, um, they fake it, right?
So advanced tactic to retain customers, make sure they’re happy with you is lots of pre-selling, then sell them the product, deliver the product. And then after the sale follow up, just like we did with a five-year-old.
And I hope that that’s an example that resonates with people because it’s an everyday life kind of thing.
It works, right? He likes the idea of school. Now you have to keep working it over the years. You know, like 13 years of school in front of him to keep selling him the idea that school is a good value
