This is another one of those concepts that applies both to ourselves as people and our role as business operators. And it really comes down to the concept of the self image. Here’s some examples. So typically people will say things to themselves. Like I’m not the kind of person who rollerskates or I’m not the kind of person who goes, uh, polka, dancing. You see what I mean? And those are funny examples, and maybe there’s a good reason not to roller skate or polka dance, but we all have a definition of ourselves that allows us to do many good things, be family, people, and workers, and business owners and community members. But we also come up to the outer limits of our definition and those are limitations. Those are things that we don’t consider. We could do like skydiving or I don’t know, owning a ferret again, I’m being funny, uh, because neither of those appealed to me, but there are plenty of people who think, you know, owning ferrets and going skydiving with them is a fabulous way to live.
So it is true that all of us limit ourselves from doing things many of which we might find enjoyable, or at least we would have actual knowledge, what does work and what doesn’t work for us. Right? And so when I say nothing is off the table, uh, for yourself as a person, you could just consider that idea. Maybe you could try some new things, but it is really important in business because every business operator and I mean every single one, all the way up to Coca-Cola Budweiser, general motors, et cetera, Apple products, right? Uh, they’re not the kind of company that sells cheap phones. Well, uh, they actually have a cheap phone out right now because they realize people don’t want to spend 1200 bucks. Or I should say that not enough. People want to spend $1,200 on a phone every two years. So they do have a cheaper phone available right now, even though for a time, they said to themselves and publicly we’re not in the cheap phone business.
So in terms of you as a business operator, you have to operate, especially in the early days. And as you mature in your operation, you have to be the kind of person who says nothing is off the table. I’ll give you another business example. There are many fine restaurants that just didn’t do takeout because it’s apparent to take that fine masterpiece of a creation and put it in, put it in a styrofoam clam shell container. Well, during the pandemic, they had two options. Either start doing, take out and have some money coming in or completely shut down operations because in most States eating in or dying in a service was illegal. Like you couldn’t serve a customer, a meal in your restaurant, which was the purpose of your fine dining establishment. So the emergency, the pandemic forced many business operators to rethink what was on the table and what was off the table.
So you saw, uh, some famous and exclusive restaurants start putting things in styrofoam containers to make some kind of sales because they were getting zero inside the dining room. Again for you as a business operator, when you are first starting out, what do you want to do? Right. We all do what we are comfortable with what we think of fits our self image, both as people and entrepreneurs. So of course you start with that. That’s the start of all businesses. Uh, but then ask yourself, could this be done in a different way? Another example, there are some business operators who do not spend money on advertising. They say to themselves, I have a Facebook page, I’ve got a YouTube channel. I’ve got a blog and a Twitter account. And that’s what I do. I don’t do advertising. Now, what they’re really saying is they haven’t learned it because it’s a whole science to itself, especially in the online arena, uh, placing the ad, spending, you know, setting budgets, demographic, targeting, et cetera.
It is rather complex. However, there’s someone in another town or city or state that says, Oh, uh, I think I learned this Facebook ad stuff. I’ll spend 10 bucks a day. So for 300 a month, maybe they’re generating 3000 in sales. So you see what I mean, one entrepreneur says I don’t do advertising. I just do this free media stuff. The other one says, uh, I’ll try it. Right? So I’m not trying to get you to skydive with a ferret. What I am suggesting is as a business operator, nothing is off the table. You should endeavor to at least think about different ways of delivering your product, pricing, your product, advertising your product, and communicating with your customer. I told another story in another recording about how one small business owner discovered that Instagram worked for her enterprise and that she was good at it.
So that was a nice fit. Uh, the Instagram, I guess, platform or format was something that resonated with her. It wasn’t that much of a stretch. We’ll also give that entrepreneurial credit because she did try some paid advertising in let’s say a news. She tried newspapers that didn’t work. Um, I think she tried postcards that didn’t work. Okay. At least she tried it, right, but nothing is off the table. If you open your business in the morning, unlock your door, whatever you do, turn on your computer. And you are starting with a small fixed set of ideas about how you do business, how you can do business, what you want to do and what you won’t do. Well, then you’re limiting your growth. You’re limiting your opportunity. At least investigate the things that you automatically say to yourself, don’t work or just, you know, aren’t you like polka, dancing and rollerskating, right?
You have to develop this skill of saying to yourself, nothing is off the table. I will investigate it. I’ll ask around. I will learn. I will maybe take a free online class about something that might help my business. Okay. Very important concept. It could, it could save your life. It could save your business, right? You might say, yeah, well, I didn’t use to do this, but I’ve gotten no money. So I’ll try this right. Again, the entrepreneur with the Instagram was concerned about losing customers and all of a sudden found a channel that worked for her and were happy for her. But you know, she tried something that was off the table. So nothing’s off the table, give everything a shot. It might save your business and your life.
