The screenshot you see on the right was what I left open on my computer when I went to bed last night.
Woke up this morning and said, yep, I have to write a premium article and nothing is done.
I had given some thought to what I was going to say and got down to it.
That’s lesson 1.
At this point in my career I love to write. It does more than give me joy. I have come to understand it is the making of myself.
But that might be a little too philosophical even for 4:49 in the morning.
Lesson 2 is in that last sentence.
Lesson 3? A healthy respect for the writing act. It remains the most effective way human beings communicate with each other.
Yes, video is faster for both creator and recipient.
Video also gets in the brain of the recipient in an insidious way. It becomes reality in the human mind and literally shapes personality.
But writing is the only act where one person can speak to another and engage the recipient’s actual thinking. The act of reading requires an effort of translation that video does not.
So the reader gets the opportunity to understand what the writer is trying to say and this effort leads to lifelong learning whereas video is nothing more than training a chimp.
Yes, chimps have money and they buy stuff. But your simian customers are not your friends, nor can they be comrades.
They remain human-like beasts.
So I cherish the act of writing because I know the recipient can become something more.
Long-term you are in the reader’s head deeper than with mere video. It is a way to make a permanent impact as opposed to being part of the surface soup that people mistake for “thoughts”.
So writing is the way to create life-long customers, if you’re in that business.
Lesson 4 – look forward to the writing act because once you get the mechanics down, chances are you will surprise yourself every day.
Lesson 5 is more practical. If you are in a position of having to write or wanting to in order to support your business you should develop “forcing mechanisms” to help you hit your quota.
These are going to be different for everyone. Part of the effective of your forcing mechanism will be that they are personal to you. But I have one idea that is effective: How to get more done with timed writing
