If you want people to buy your stuff, you have to get lots of people’s attention. Even if 1% of the population would actually buy from you that means you have to talk to a hundred people to make one sale. A thousand people to make ten sales. And ten thousand people to make 100 sales.
If you want to make 100 sales a month the math is clear.
There are three ways to get attention:
- Be interesting in yourself.
- Have people talk about you.
- Pay for it.
The dream is to get on the internet and make some noise and get attention for free. This is often a delusion. You are one of a billion people trying to draw attention to yourself. This is why the conversation has devolved into violence and outrageous, often nonsensical statements.
The second way is by people commenting on you, your content or offering and spreading the word. This can be accomplished by being interesting in yourself and also covers the realm of writing for other websites, doing interviews and guest posts.
The third way is advertising. Since this costs money it explains why advertising has had so much art and science poured into it over the last hundred and change years. Paying for attention works. There are two rough approaches. The first is to pay for attention so people get to know you and you can bring them into your world. The second is to sell to them directly via advertising. Since this often results in either break-even math or a slight loss, you must have a way to sell them something else to make a profit off the original advertising cost.
For now I want to leave you with the idea that you have to get attention if you want to sell. You can build a plane in your garage but if you can’t get it off the ground all you did was waste your time.
Think about the three ways of getting attention. Think how to reach ten thousand people a month and that is enough for now.
