Back in college there was this French guy who was on the tennis team.
Young, athletic and working that accent, he was popular.
One day he told me his secret:
“When you come to a new country nobody knows who you are.”
And then he added:
“You can be anything you want.”
Hunh. I smiled when he said it and I am smiling now.
He used that belief to navigate the new world he was living.
It had the advantage of being true as well as useful.
It’s truth is obvious but he used it to his advantage. I didn’t know him that well but I think he just decided to not have any hang-ups and be what he wanted to be.
Like I said, he was popular.
And you, who want to be in business and perhaps the business of writing – isn’t it true that no one knows who you are?
That is a blessing you can use.
You can decide what kind of business you want to have, what kind of writer you want to be.
