I see this on YouTube channels all the time. People put out great, fun and entertaining content and then at the end they lose their minds tripping over their tongue asking for people to buy their merch or T-shirts or whatever.
Subscribers to Retired Writer’s Club don’t have this problem.
That’s because they have absorbed the truth that the only purpose of business activity is to make money.
And this goes for entertainers as well. People just don’t spend hundreds of hours creating videos let’s say on YouTube channels for fun. It’s a business that they do for views and they do it to make sales.
My advice to them would be to say something like hey if you wanna join the party get a T-shirt if you want to show the world that you’re having a good time wear our baseball caps, etc.
They need to integrate the idea of buying merchandise into all their messaging not just at the end of the video where they beg someone to buy something.
It’s very simple once you absorb the truth about the purpose of business activity. And everything you do whether it is posting, writing videos or podcasts is business activity.
I don’t make a secret that my purpose for writing content that appears in public view is to convince people to get on our secret email list by subscribing, which means spending money with me.
That’s the only reason I’m doing the free stuff.
Now when you speak directly in this manner to the customer you will actually gain very strong fans. People like confident and straightforward people especially in a world full of dissemblers.
You also get people who don’t like it and say oh he’s just in it for the money. And that’s OK. Long-term even if those people did buy something they wouldn’t be strong repeat and high-value lifetime customers. But that’s not even the point.
You should begin every day with the idea that the purpose of your business activity is to create sales. Therefore it becomes part of your DNA. Therefore it then becomes part of your messaging DNA.
Our goal among many is to shorten the amount of time and effort it takes to acquire a customer. Because that is the business we are in.
