I have a small piece of software that helps “improve” my writing. It is a WordPress plugin that automatically checks for the following:
- Run-on sentences
- Passive voice
- Transition words
- Paragraph length
- Reading score
Some old-school mavericks say this is selling out. Some authoritarians say you should surrender to the robot.
I walk the middle path because my first concern is quality.
The plugin assigns a color to each message – Green, Yellow, Red.
After writing is done I take a brief look at the score. I will check if there is anything that can be fixed quickly. In the heat of composition sometimes you miss things.
And that’s okay. Getting it down is the important thing editing is easy.
But I don’t go crazy. There are times when I disagree with the software and that’s okay. I know when I did something for a reason.
I would say the reading score is something I pay attention to the most. That is a scale of how easy your copy is to read. One guy I respect said you don’t want to go lower than 75.
I use the plugin called Yoast SEO. I am sure there are others but if you use WordPress you should check it out.
The point is to be effective, neither a slave or a sellout.
